Wing Race - Interactive Red Bull Vending Machine

Winter/Spring 2014
Red Bull & ZHdK Cooperation

Role: Gameplay Programmming

Wing Race was created as part of a cooperation between the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK and popular energy drink distributor Red Bull, as part of their 'Red Bull Gamify' initiative. Our original idea was to have a vending machine where you can win a can of Red Bull by playing a game. The project was then slightly adjusted as per Red Bull's requests, which included adding the aspect of music and rhythm to the gameplay among other changes

The game that we made was controlled by kinect. The player steers their avatar by holding their arms to the side and tilting their upper body to glide to the left or right. Every few seconds, in accordance with the rhythm of the song playing in the background, the player needs to flap their 'wings' to gain new upswing. We adjusted it for a vertical screen, according to the plan of having it run on something like a vending machine eventually.

In the end, such a "vending machine" was never actually created, but the project helped me cement my then freshly acquired basic programming skills.

Art and assets were created by Don Schmocker whereas the kinect controls were implemented by Christian Schmidhalter.
